On Big Good Dildos, I don’t just review XXL sex toys—I also take an interest in the manufacturers shaping this market. Understanding their philosophy, creative process, and the challenges they face allows us to go beyond simple product listings and take a deeper look at what makes a great sex toy.
That’s why I launched a series of interviews with manufacturers, whether they are well-established brands or smaller artisanal workshops, to better understand what goes on behind the sex toys we use.
For this first edition, I reached out to Weredog, a brand that has made a name for itself with a strong identity and designs inspired by furry and fantasy universes. I wasn’t expecting such a detailed and warm response. Not only did they agree enthusiastically, but their founder, Kara, along with Roman, a team member, took the time to answer my questions with rare transparency and dedication.
In this interview, Weredog shares its journey, from artisanal beginnings to the challenges of an expanding company. A fascinating discussion that offers a deeper look into a brand that continues to evolve.
Weredog in a Few Words: A Brand with a Unique Identity
Founded by a passionate creator, Weredog is a UK-based brand specializing in high-quality silicone sex toys. Its aesthetic is heavily influenced by the furry and fantasy culture, with designs inspired by anthropomorphic animals and imaginary creatures.
What Sets It Apart
- A Wide Range of Inspirations: Some dildos have familiar shapes, while others explore more original concepts, like Brook, an otter-inspired dildo, or Mason, a pair of silicone dragon paws.
- An Artisanal Approach: Each dildo is handcrafted, and the brand offers extensive customization with a variety of colors and finishes.
- A Developed Narrative Universe: Each model is part of an immersive story, featuring a unique character and detailed lore.
- Strong Community Engagement: Weredog listens to user feedback while maintaining a creative direction that remains true to itself.
Today, Weredog is a rapidly growing company that continues to push the boundaries of design and innovation. But how did it all begin? Let’s take a look at the brand’s history with its founder.
From Artisanal Beginnings to a Recognized Brand
Like many independent manufacturers, Weredog’s journey started as a passion project: “I love designing things, and when I was starting out, it was just a hobby. The idea of making perfect copies of things via molds had been interesting to me for a while, and I was already a silicone toy user, so—it kinda made sense!” explains Kara.
Over time, this hobby turned into a fully-fledged brand with a strong identity. Weredog stands out particularly for its deep roots in the furry culture, a choice that was intentional from the beginning: “I’m primarily a furry, and I love content from a bunch of other communities too, so I wanted a name that was furry-adjacent while not feeling like it excluded anyone.”
Today, Weredog is no longer a one-person business: “There is now a whole team working at Weredog to produce, market, and ship our toys. But I’ll give you my perspective from when it was just me, up till now.”
Today, Weredog is much more than a personal project—it’s a passionate team that designs, produces, and ships its dildos. But how are their models created? Between personal inspirations, community feedback, and technical constraints, designing a Weredog sex toy is a meticulous process.
Design and Inspiration: How Are Weredog Models Created?
Models Inspired by Passion and Feedback
Contrary to what one might think, new models are not chosen solely based on demand. Of course, the team keeps an eye on trends and customer suggestions, but above all, their enthusiasm for a project is what matters most: “We’ve experimented with a few ways of deciding! We’ve run polls, we keep an eye on common requests on social media, etc. But ultimately, it’s whatever we internally find exciting. We wanna make people happy with our products, but if I and the team aren’t at least a little horny/enthused for an idea, chances are the end result isn’t going to turn out as well as a project that we’re passionate about.”
Models are usually born from a specific aesthetic or an inspiration based on a fantasy species. Kara then works with a modeler to bring the initial idea to life: “I’ll sit with a modeler and direct the look of the project alongside them.”
Some Familiar Forms… and Others Completely Unexpected
The Weredog lineup may seem cohesive in its design, but some models, like Brook, inspired by an otter, clearly stand out. Kara explains that the brand enjoys exploring less conventional fetishes: “There’s lots of variance in there—look at Creature, Nile, Hudson, Dagger, etc! Something I do like to push (and am passionate about personally) is somewhat more obscure kinks; it’s nice to be able to serve crowds who’re into less conventional things.”
Brook, for example, was designed with the vore community in mind, while Mason, a pair of silicone dragon paws, was created to cater to paw play enthusiasts: “Just as with Mason, our dragon’s footpaws; we released the first silicone product ever really targeted at the paw fetish folks.”
And that’s just the beginning: “We have some absolutely wild designs in the works that I don’t think anyone is expecting. Those naturally take a bit longer to engineer, but they’ll get out there before long.”
Is there a product that perfectly represents the brand?
It’s hard to sum up the brand with a single model, but Kara has a particular fondness for Nile due to its smooth and comfortable texture. However, he always recommends a model based on the user’s preferences and level of experience: “If someone asks me for a recommendation, my first questions are: What’s their experience level? What do they find hot? What do they want to feel?”
That said, one of the most popular models and one that was particularly fun to design is Dagger: “It’s one of my favorites, and it quickly became a best-seller!”
Each Weredog model has its own identity, and it’s hard to pick just one that fully represents the brand. Between personal preferences and commercial success, some stand out more than others.
Beyond sex toy design, Weredog develops a rich universe where each product is accompanied by illustrations and immersive storytelling. This narrative work plays a key role in the brand’s identity and deserves attention.
The Narrative Universe of Weredog: A Team Effort
One of the unique aspects of Weredog is the universe built around its products. Each model has its own story, with graphic design and a well-defined identity. This lore is developed in an organic way: “We start with a toy concept, and someone on the team suggests a personality or story idea. That often influences certain features of the final product!”
Once the character is defined, an artist is commissioned for the illustration, and either Kara or another team member writes the biography. Sometimes, the process works in reverse: “In some cases, we have the story first, and then we design the toy around it.”
However, creating a silicone toy isn’t just about its design or concept. Behind every silicone toy lie technical constraints and commercial challenges. From production to distribution, Weredog has to navigate strict requirements while preserving its creative identity. How do they manage these challenges on a daily basis?
Between Passion and Challenges: The Behind-the-Scenes Reality
Design and Production: Balancing Precision and Creativity
Creating a high-quality silicone toy isn’t just about imagining its shape. It also needs to be manufactured without defects: “We have to ensure that the design details don’t trap air bubbles during molding. Each material has a different viscosity, so we need to adapt our production techniques accordingly.”
Additionally, artisanal manufacturing requires standardizing techniques to ensure consistency in the products delivered to customers: “With all our variations in colors and styles, it’s crucial that the entire team masters production methods to ensure every order meets customer expectations.”
Navigating Restrictions and Distribution Challenges
Like many sex toy manufacturers, Weredog must navigate various regulations. Some laws impose restrictions not only on adult content but also on LGBTQ+ communities: “We closely monitor these restrictions. Fortunately, they haven’t impacted us too much yet, but it remains a constant concern.”
Regarding distribution, Weredog prioritizes direct sales: “We haven’t sought to be present in numerous stores because our products offer such a variety of colors that it makes more sense to sell directly rather than stock only a few variations at retailers.”
However, Gaymegastore remains their main European distributor, and the team continuously works to reduce shipping costs.
A Unique Positioning: Between Quality and Playfulness
While Weredog takes pride in crafting high-quality products, the brand also stands out with its refreshingly casual communication. Where other manufacturers opt for a strictly commercial tone or highly polished branding, Weredog embraces a more spontaneous and approachable style.
“We like to uphold a certain standard, but honestly, half the time, we just like to shitpost. Just like with our products, we share what we find funny in the hope that you will too!”
This lighthearted and direct approach strengthens their bond with the community and perfectly reflects the brand’s identity. “Weredog has to pay its staff, but there’s absolutely no reason it can’t be fun at the same time!”
A Collaboration with Bad Dragon That Helped Weredog Grow
In June 2021, Weredog announced a collaboration with Bad Dragon, a leading brand in the fantasy sex toy market. Four years later, where does this partnership stand, and what impact has it had on Weredog?
“For the most part, Weredog and Bad Dragon operate independently (partly due to the time difference!). We check in, share new techniques or data that might be useful, and make sure everything is running smoothly.” explains Kara.
The main benefit of this alliance was the initial investment, which allowed Weredog to launch and expand. But today, the brand operates entirely independently and continues to grow at its own pace. “From a design perspective, I feel completely free, without any external pressure.”
Weredog has successfully established its own identity and continues to evolve according to its own vision. More than just a sex toy manufacturer, the brand aims to provide an experience that goes beyond the product itself. Its founder shares a final thought on the importance of exploration and pleasure without limitations.
A Final Message: Explore and Have Fun
Beyond the business side, Kara and his team have a clear goal: “Our goal is to help people explore their sexuality in a fun and safe way. I love kink and character-based stuff, and being able to encourage others to dive into it is a fantastic use of our time.”
His final advice? “Find a toy or a character that you find hot and… go for it. With a lot of lube, of course!”
A Manufacturer That Stands Out
The interview with Weredog provided insight not only into the brand’s history and philosophy but also the challenges it faces. From a passion for handcrafted molding to managing a thriving business, its founder’s journey highlights the complexity and creativity required to innovate in the sex toy industry.
Beyond creating unique and high-end products, Weredog stands out with an authentic and passionate approach. Each model is designed with meticulous attention to detail, whether in its shape, texture, or even the narrative universe that accompanies it. This dedication explains why the brand has built such a loyal and enthusiastic community.
